“Candida and Hair Loss”

Hair loss, the kind that causes one’s overall scalp to be covered in thinning hair, affects both men and women.   It is often associated with a scaly scalp rash that is sometimes itchy.  The scales can flake off, taking hair with them.  Some people think its due to dandruff or that the skin changes and hair loss are a normal part of aging or are a hereditary condition.

Doctors, unfortunately, are sometimes not much better at identifying the cause of this problem.  They might recommend a dandruff shampoo or a particular solution that contains hydrocortisone.  These treatments often do not help and the hydrocortisone solution, while it may reduce the itching, can actually worsen the problem.

Finally, a shampoo containing the medication, ketoconazole, was released.  Amazingly, those people who used it found that the scaliness resolved, the itching was relieved and the hair began growing back.  The reason, it can be assumed, is that the ketoconazole in the shampoo had something to do with it.  Perhaps it is because ketoconazole is a potent antifungal medication.

All of this time, the scalp rash and hair loss that were thought to be due to dandruff or heredity were actually the result of a Candida yeast infection of the scalp.  Candida lives all over our skin but thrives in areas that are moist, like when one has a sweaty or oily scalp, and whenever our immune system isn’t as sharp as it should be.  If someone takes strong antibiotics, is on birth control pills, has an immune deficiency disease, is diabetic or takes steroids, they create an environment that is favorable for Candida overgrowth.

Candida displaces the healthy bacteria in our scalp and grows on and inside our scalp tissues, leaving the scalp unhealthy and resulting in hair loss.  The previous treatment involving hydrocortisone solution was actually making the situation worse as this contains a steroid that worsens the localized immune response.

Other than the antifungal shampoo, natural antifungal agents or probiotic products can replace the Candida with healthy bacteria that belongs on the skin in the first place. In cases where an individual develops chronic hair loss due to this condition, the steady use of a product is advisable.  The problem with using ketoconazole shampoo for this purpose is that the Candida can mutate and develop immunity to the ketoconazole.  The natural antifungal products or probiotics do not have the same problem with resistance.
